Maya Cacao Belt 2026 (Belize, Guatemala and Mexico)

In May 2026 we set out on a 3 week journey through the Mayan cacao belt, travelling from Belize into Guatemala and then north through Chiapas and Tabasco. This is a part of the world where cacao has been cultivated, traded and celebrated for thousands of years, with a history deeply entwined with Maya culture. We followed that story through the landscape itself, visiting cacao farms and communities, meeting our producing partners and learning more about the varieties and traditions that continue to shape cacao here today.

Our journey began in Belize, a country that has become especially important to Chocolate Tree through the cacao we source from Maya Mountain Cacao. From there we crossed into Guatemala, travelling down to Coban and visiting FundaLachua on lake Lachua, before travelling through the Petén and visiting the ancient Maya world around Tikal, before continuing north into Tabasco, Mexico, a historic heartland of cacao.
